Low Key Techno circa 1999? Bedroom Mix – miked (oursoundtracks)

So initially I bought turntables to play techno music. This was the final mix I made while still living at my parents house – wow – so long ago. I moved out around ’99 or so so this mix must be from around then. You can tell it’s dated by the fact that it was recorded in two 45min halves in order to be put on tape. I initially played fairly aggressive stuff, but this mix marked my departure into a bit mellower realm of techno…heavy on keys. This mix probably consists of 50% or more of california artists (such as..Kit Clayton, John Tejada, Dean DeCosta), but also includes a healthy dose of others. There are quite a few tracks from Force Inc’s “Force Lab” series, some Robert Hood, Jeff Mills, Chain Reaction..etc. Side B gets a little more aggressive. As with all of my mixes on here, they were practice mixes, not intended for sharing, but so much time has passed, and I never got around to re-attempting any of them…so enjoy the good sounds along with the mistakes (like messing around with doubles for too long at the end of side B).

Side A starts with a long intro of an old Kit Clayton track that goes into a Mouse On Mars track, then back into another Kit Clayton track off the Plug Research “Lunch Box” series..before we start getting into some beats.

Tribute to ROOTS TANK and Dub Smokin

Dub Smokin was a great monthly event I used to play at while living in Tokyo.  The event got started before I came along, but I was later asked to become a regular dj for the evening.  The event was held every 4th Saturday at one of my all-time favorite reggae spots that was in Shibuya – Roots Tank.  To our dismay, Roots Tank was closed a couple years back and that eventually brought an end to this event as well.  The place was a relatively low-pro gem of Jamaican gettaway.  Great atmosphere on the 4th floor, LOUD system till morning, cheap drinks, usually no entrance fee, and an overall “anything goes” mentality made the place home to many a lawless night of fun.

I really wanted to get a few mixes from the regulars of the event, especially the organizer and dear friend Nametake, but for various reasons no one has pulled through thus far.  I was lucky enough, however, to get a super solid mix coming from Tetsu-san, who joined the event the last few times before Roots Tank closed; though his record collection outshines all of those whose names are on the flier ; )

We usually all played 2 45min to an hour sets.  I intended to make two mixes for this tribute, but have so far had only time for this one.  This mix represents what I might play towards the latter half of the morning, when peoples heads and feet have gotten a bit heavier.  The mix I still haven’t made yet would be more upbeat, perhaps with some  funk thrown in etc… So don’t get the impression that the evening was always this heavy.  This mix is basically heavy after heavy.  The beats are heavy and the lyrics are heavy.  Heavy on Rasta/Black liberation (to Zion).  I LOVE every track on here.

(Side note:  One of my American friends that I sent this mix to in the past once said “love the mix, but what the hell is that “nigger” track??”   Yes, there is a dub version of the song called “Every Nigger is a Star”.  Yes, there are songs about being black and black liberation.  Yes, I am as white as they come.  I make no claims to understand what it is like to be black and in no way consider myself to be an “honorary brother” of any kind.  I am also, obviously, not a Rastafarian.  All I can say is that this music, musically/lyrically/production-wise, moves my soul.  I only aim to share music that I love and that moves me, in hopes that it does the same to you.  I would be a greatly saddened if I ever offended anyone in the process.)

Tetsu’s mix is an excellent mix of 80s Roots original 12″s.  As I’ve mentioned before on two other posts from Testu (see: Wackie’s Origingal 45s Vol. I & Vol. II), the man has an insane record collection…a handful of some of his treasures would definitely be worth more than most of my entire collection.  In this mix you can enjoy the reggae 12″ single style of the original version followed by either the “DJ” version (where a “dj” mc’s over a dub of the original track) or a “dub version” of the original.  Dub, in case you may not know, was the product of the producer taking out most or all of the vocal tracks, messing with the all the other tracks and adding delay etc…to create a bugged out instrumental version of the original track.  The “DJ” style basically grew out of actual mcs at soundsystem parties mc-ing live over these dubs.  This was a hit at the dance parties and was then recorded in the studio.  To see some original dub production in action check out one of the masters at work HERE.

。。Heavy Heavy Sounds…

Original Wackies Vol. I and Vol. IIもそうでした。

Jams mix by miked @ Dublab

(Carmen Maki 7″ “Even if I die” – Words by Terayama Shuji)

As I mentioned on the Asakawa Maki post, when I was back home in LA in December I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to record a couple sets at the Dublab studios.

This set, unlike the Asakawa Maki set, was mainly on CDs and relatively void of forethought.  Also, this was my first time ever trying to use CDj machines, definitely threw me off…songs starting when they shouldn’t, general mood of panic – basically, flying by the seat of my cosmic pants…But hey, no better place to close our eyes and use the force of our cosmic pants than dublab!   At any rate, I just wanted to give a sampling of Japanese music that I’ve really been into  over the years since being here in Japan.  Before and since coming to Japan, the world of Japanese music has been a relatively tough shell to crack.   Of course there are some standard greats like all the Group Sounds stuff of the 60s, Fuzzed out craziness in the 70s (Raillez etc..), Boredoms, Cornelius etc. in the 90s and 00s, but at the same time you can often be quite hard pressed to find stuff that isn’t just crap or nice try, but that was already done before… Of course, the internet has changed the game enormously in recent years, but it took me years before I didn’t feel like finding a truly great Japanese artist was like finding a needle in haystack; or maybe I’m just getting used to needle hunting.

It also can be an extremely tough task to stay objective and distinguish between the truly great and the mediocre that just sounds good because a) you haven’t been able to find much else or b) because I’m more immersed in the culture than those who don’t live here and therefore like inexplicable/untranslatable things about.  Who knows.  You can be the judge.

Getting back to the task at hand.  In this mix I have tried to put together a mix where the audio-aesthetics would be for the most part agreeable to the pallets of lovers of odd music goodness and dublab listeners of course.  The first third of the mix is on vinyl the rest on cds.  It begins with some earlier traditional and early folk music numbers and works it’s way in out of the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and 2000s… The title of the mix “Hakkoushokuhin” means “fermented foods”.  Fermentation is basically the soul of Japanese food (the heart being rice and soy beans).  Sake/Shochu, soy sauce, miso, natto, tsukemono to name a few.  In the same smelly, dark, and grimy spirit of this fermentation that makes Japanese food what it is and the people who they are I made this mix. (Yes, I’m being purposely ridiculous.)  There is still so much more I wanted to play, hopefully I’ll get around to it someday.  Till then,

Let’s eat.

Grab the mix here$$$

Asakawa Maki Tribute mix – live @ dublab studio Dec. 2010

So I’m jumping the gun a little bit on this one.  This mix was recorded for release on dublab, but I’m gonna go ahead and post it before they do (hope they don’t mind).  When I went back home to CA for xmas I dropped in to the dublab studios to record a couple sets of Japanese music that I’ve picked up along my stay here.  One of the two was this Asakawa Maki tribute set, and the other a Japanese music sampler of sorts which I WON’T be posting here until it’s been up at dublab.  The only reason why I’m choosing to post this ahead of time is because I wanted to make sure this was up for the 1 year anniversary of her death, January 17th.  THANK YOU DUBLAB for the chance to record this and share with an infinitely larger audience than happen to look under this rock.

Asakawa Maki (Maki Asakawa) has over time become one of my all-time favorite Japanese artists whose records I keep going back to, with whisky in hand, over and over again.  The jackets are amazing, Maki looks amazing, she sounds amazing, the musicians… uh, just what you would want a record of a 70s avant-garde, jazz singer from the Tokyo underground to be.  You can check her discograpy here at Discogs where you find this short bio of her:

“Japanese female jazz and blues singer, lyricist and composer. Born in January 27, 1942 in Ishikawa-ken. Died January 17, 2010 in Nagoya.
Sang at US Army bases in Japan before getting her big break in a series of concerts organized by underground playwright Shuji Terayama in 1968.”

I first realized that she had worked closely with Shuji Terayama when I noticed that he had penned many of the lyrics to her songs – in the early era.  Terayama is a massive name in the avant-garde, underground art world in Japan.  The fact that Maki had worked so closely with Terayama intrigued me more than I already had been and made the already perfect picture complete.  Definitely check out the world of Terayam Shuji (youtube and otherwise), it can also lead you to the intertwined otherworld of JA Seazar (worthy of another post).

As that bio states, Maki passed away a year ago today in Nagoya city.  She had continued releasing records and live performances right up to her death and was in Nagoya for a weekend of shows when she passed in her sleep in her hotel room.  My wife and I were lucky enough to get the chance to see her a few months earlier in September of 09 in Tokyo.  I hadn’t heard all that much of her later releases so  I wasn’t sure what we would find, but she was as dark and under-garde as ever…a truly powerful performance from a woman who completely and perfectly embodied the character that you imagine when looking at and listening to the records.  We were planning on seeing her again when we read the sad news of her passing.

This was an all vinyl mix from the records I happened to have at the time.  I brought six of her records with me and played tracks from 5 of them.  So, just a selection of some of my favorites that I had on record.  For the sake of sanity I’m not going to post the tracklist, just the records I pulled from.  Feel free to email me if you have any more specific questions about the mix.

The albums are her 1st,3rd,4th,5th and 10th releases.  I didn’t have the second release at the time of this mix, I do now, and wish I had it to mix in…oh well.  I brought the 6th release, but didn’t use anything from it.  All releases are on EMI Express.  Album titles are as follows.

Maki no Sekai” (The World of Maki) – 1970
Live – 1972
Blue Spirit Blues – 1972
UraMado” (Back Window) – 1973
One – 1980

So, thank you Asakawa Maki.  I hope this is one small step in further spreading your work that should have been more widely enjoyed while you were here.

Enjoy the mix – (feel free to fast forward past my embarrassing spoken intro)

AfroNight in Tokyo @ Drum Song

So now that I’ve moved out of Tokyo I’d like to put up a few entries to say “thanks for the many good memories” to a few Tokyo spots, fellow djs, and people who came out to show their love for the music over the years.

This entry in particular is a shout out to everyone who made our tri-monthly event called AfroNight such an enjoyable little night.  The spot was an ALL reggae bar in Shimokitazawa called Drum Song.

The owner, and dear friend, was open enough to warm up to the idea of an OCCASIONAL non-reggae night when the idea was put to him by fellow Drum Song frequenteuer, Nozomi.  I think Nozomi was about 19 or 20 when I first met her and was just starting to buy some records, so MUCH props to her for putting together this night – and later this mix.  The theme of AfroNight was simply “black music” (that’s actually what the section is called at music stores here) other than reggae, mainly soul, funk etc…   These nights were always SO MUCH fun because they were only every 3 months or so, so we got lots of people to come out in force.  For me, it was just so much fun to play something other than reggae music.  I love me some reggae, but I never intended to be an all reggae dj, but that’s somehow how things worked themselves out while I was in Tokyo.  Anyways, thanks to everyone for this night, especially you Nozomi-chan! Thanks for inviting me to play! Thank You Kaoru at Drum Song, Thank You AfroNight crew, and Thank You Tetsu!

Below are 3 mixes of music typical of the event from myslef, Nozomi, and Tetsu who was our special guest dj for our last event~

AfroNight Mix 1 by me – miked

AfroNight Mix – miked (double click to stream/right click and save as)

This mix is all vinyl of mainly reissues except for a couple originals thrown in at towards the end.  A lot of the stuff can be found out about if you fish around the following labels, which I highly recommend you do, Truth & Soul, Now Again/Soul Cal, Daptone, and Numero Group. All of these labels have dug up some rare and amazing gems for reissue.  There are also a few tracks that were actually recorded relatively recently…over the past few years there have been some incredible releases in the revival soul/funk scene.  As to which songs are reissues and which are actually new recordings…I’ll leave that to you to figure out.

The mix takes you through some banging funk and gritty soul for a while and finishes up with some west coasty 70s goodness.  Great for a sunny day off.   – - There’s a fair amount of artist repetition going on in here, but the mix was just for fun and there were too many 7″s  where I just simply couldn’t decide between side A or B .

Truth & Soul, Now Again/Soul Cal, Daptone, and Numero Group.

AfroNight Mix 2 by Nozomi

It took me a while, but I finally convinced Nozomi to come over to my place and record this mix.  She always claimed to be too much of a beginner, but since the event was coming to end and I was moving back to Nagano – she came through.  Hope to hang out soon again Nozomi-chan!

A great party mix that kept everyone dancing and wanting to drink more!

AfroNight Mix 3 by Tetsu

An Oursoundtracks favorite with his selections of all original Wackie’s vinyl, Tetsu-san also came through on our last event as a special guest.  He played two sets that night, the first kept the Jamaican vibe of our location while still maintaining the soul for the event.  The second was definitely more AfroNight-ish, but unfortunately I only have the first..which is a great set of tunes though..but still more reggae than what one might expect at AfroNight.

2 Old Mixes from me – miked

for sunny days off

this mix was in prep for playing at a small event we put on in Nagano a few years ago to see how the tracks went together. luckily it turned out ok enough to keep. old reggae and Jamaican funk. goes from toasted “DJ” style tracks through funk, rocksteady reggae; with a few James Brown tracks thrown in in honor of since he had just passed at the time. i haven’t gotten around to putting the playlist together yet, maybe i will someday, or if asked. this is all vinyl except for the JB tracks. please download/stream and enjoy.

Jamaican Funk & Reggae (mix by miked)

for stoney days off

this set was recorded while i was living in Oakland. at that time i had recently decided to start buying some reggae, mainly re-pressed 7″s. this was my first ever reggae mix;playing nearly every7″ I had at the time. this set is all 7″s and is mainly heady roots-reggae and some dub. as with the Funk mix above, i can’t mix reggae and don’t have any effects so this is basically just playing one song one after the other with a concentrated effort to make that transition as painless as possible. this set is dedicated to sitting in Golden Gate Park eating avocado/cheese subs from Yellow Submarine with R. Rosen…homesick

It’s been quite a while since I put anything up here cause I’ve been away for the holidays.  I really hope everyone had an enjoyable and safe new year holiday.  Hope to have a lot of new mixes coming your way.

miked (oursoundtracks) – Just Because Hip Hop mix

I threw this mix together while trying to figure out what to play at a little party of a friend of mine out here about 2 years ago I guess.  It had been years since I tried mixing hip hop (you can find some old hip hop mixes of mine in the hop hop section), it was fun to do again, but as you can hear, I’m always shaky when it comes to hiphop mixing.  I never put this mix up cause there was some mixing that I just couldn’t bare at the end, but I just cut that off ; )   Again, I’m no expert dj but I hope you can enjoy the tunes.  After listening to this again it makes me want to make another hip hop mix with some newer stuff; hopefully I’ll get around to that someday soon.

The mix starts out with some soul sounds, but moves on quickly enough to the beats.  Tons of love goes out to a couple labels “featured” on here: Stones Throw and Fondle Em – and also to the sound of the Visioneers.  (I’m sure everyone is hip on the brilliance of Stones Throw Records, but the less known, now extinct Fondle ‘Em Records is also NOT TO BE MISSED check here and here. Kool Keith, Godfather Don, MF Doom, Mf Grimm, Company Flow – they all were there.)

このmixの中、Stones Throw Records, Fondle ‘Em Records, and Visioneersが注目です!

ENJOY – (If you listen…leave a commet, let us know what you think…please?   !!)

LEGOlaB

lego-sign-copy

This mix I put together while my wife was a manager at a LEGO store here in Japan.  The store was sent music from the head office, which sometimes worked with the stores atmosphere, but often didn’t.  This mix among others we put together became part of the rotation.

We both are big Stereolab fans, so I just grabbed some songs from a few different albums and there you have it.  These are not necessarily my “favorite” Stereolab songs of all time, just ones that I thought would go nicely with the store.  If you are big Stereolab fan and have most of their albums, this mix won’t do much for you.  However, IF you are relatively new to Stereolab, this is a nice mix to start out with.  IF YOU HAVEN’T HEARD MUCH STEREOLAB, I URGE YOU TO DO SO.  Easily the most consitant band on my top 10 list over the past 15 years or so. A mix of krautrock(NEU!), 60s french pop, and lounge…post-rock icons.

NEU!

Check it Out!

Music To Get Married By

SO, i just got married! here’s a little mix i made in stead of a dj. it was mainly just background music for when all my family members weren’t up there singing and making a fantastic wedding. it probably went largely unnoticed by most…except for a few of the aficionados in the crowd. so, for any who were there and curious about what exactly was playing, and for those who weren’t but enjoy a good mix of early soul, jamaican soul and reggae…here you are.

UPDATE – Based on this mix, the owner of my favorite local reggae dive in Shimokitazawa, DRUM SONG, and I decided to throw a wedding party with the whole night being themed around early soul/jamaican love songs.  We then made CDs of this mix (which you can now find below) and passed them out to all the guests.  A good good time it was!
