Jams mix by miked @ Dublab

(Carmen Maki 7″ “Even if I die” – Words by Terayama Shuji)

As I mentioned on the Asakawa Maki post, when I was back home in LA in December I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to record a couple sets at the Dublab studios.
This set, unlike the Asakawa Maki set, was mainly on CDs and relatively void of forethought. Also, this was my first time ever trying to use CDj machines, definitely threw me off…songs starting when they shouldn’t, general mood of panic – basically, flying by the seat of my cosmic pants…But hey, no better place to close our eyes and use the force of our cosmic pants than dublab! At any rate, I just wanted to give a sampling of Japanese music that I’ve really been into over the years since being here in Japan. Before and since coming to Japan, the world of Japanese music has been a relatively tough shell to crack. Of course there are some standard greats like all the Group Sounds stuff of the 60s, Fuzzed out craziness in the 70s (Raillez etc..), Boredoms, Cornelius etc. in the 90s and 00s, but at the same time you can often be quite hard pressed to find stuff that isn’t just crap or nice try, but that was already done before… Of course, the internet has changed the game enormously in recent years, but it took me years before I didn’t feel like finding a truly great Japanese artist was like finding a needle in haystack; or maybe I’m just getting used to needle hunting.
It also can be an extremely tough task to stay objective and distinguish between the truly great and the mediocre that just sounds good because a) you haven’t been able to find much else or b) because I’m more immersed in the culture than those who don’t live here and therefore like inexplicable/untranslatable things about. Who knows. You can be the judge.
Getting back to the task at hand. In this mix I have tried to put together a mix where the audio-aesthetics would be for the most part agreeable to the pallets of lovers of odd music goodness and dublab listeners of course. The first third of the mix is on vinyl the rest on cds. It begins with some earlier traditional and early folk music numbers and works it’s way in out of the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and 2000s… The title of the mix “Hakkoushokuhin” means “fermented foods”. Fermentation is basically the soul of Japanese food (the heart being rice and soy beans). Sake/Shochu, soy sauce, miso, natto, tsukemono to name a few. In the same smelly, dark, and grimy spirit of this fermentation that makes Japanese food what it is and the people who they are I made this mix. (Yes, I’m being purposely ridiculous.) There is still so much more I wanted to play, hopefully I’ll get around to it someday. Till then,
Let’s eat.
Grab the mix here$$$

Andy Votel – A Bird On The Head Is Worth Six In The Hand – Dublab mix

This one’s just a pass-along from Dublab. One of the more super great mixes I’ve been really enjoying lately. Dig it all, but’ve never heard any of it before. The man has records. Definitely intergalactic.
–From Dublab
We proudly present another masterfully stitched together string of deep gems from the one and only man of a million mystic sounds, Andy Votel. Prior to recording this mix Mr. Votel conjured a flock of ravens to scour the globe for lost musical artifacts with which to brew his sonic spell. As you fall under the hypnotic radiance of this mix click your way into the world ofFinders Keepers and you will be forever set adrift in a zone of musical awe. (The above photo was snapped by the equally far-out Godsy.)

Kutmah – From LA with Love

A tasty mixed sampler from Art Don’t Sleep’s From LA With Love release. Mixed by Kutmah and Take originally aired and still available on the highly recommended Dublab podcast. It’s things like this that feed my increasingly aching homesickness…Thank you LA.
Ranking Joe & Echodelic Soundsystem @ Dublab

Given that Dublab has been with us for over 10 years now and are holding their annual pledge drive I thought I’d continue on the Dublab tip for a bit. If you haven’t heard of Dublab yet I REALLY REALLY suggest you get yourself acquainted with em. They’ve got SO much going on… Once you become a listener, consider giving a “proton grant”.
As can be seen by the previous post, Dublab brings consistent greatness. This time a priceless set from Ranking Joe on the mic and Tom Chasteen on the turntables. BRILLIANT!
Here’s how Dublab explained it:
“We were thrilled to have the legendary dancehall deejay Ranking Joe come by dublab for another session. He was in town to perform at Dub Club’s New Years Eve sound explosion so the good Mr. Tom Chasteen of Echodelic Soundsystem brought him by the lab for an amazing session anchored by Echodelic’s heavy selections and dubs. So amazing!”
If you are in or around LA make sure to make your way over to the DUB CLUB home of the Echodelic Soundsystem.
ENJOY!

DJ Nuts live on Dublab Radio

Once again, I have to thank the great people over at Dublab for consistently bringing beautiful sounds to the world – special thanks to Frosty. Whenever you just want some good music and vibes to go along with your day, be sure to tune in to DUBLAB radio. Of course, for this mix extra special thanks goes out to DJ Nuts for being down enough to not mind being further shared around the internet. DJ Nuts is truly an amazing dj with amazing records. This mix is actually from a couple years ago, but I’ve never tired of it and am finally putting it up here. I love this mix. Hope you all enjoy it and pass it along. We hope to be blessed with some more goodness from DJ Nuts in the future.
The mix took place at the Dublab studio while DJ Nuts, along with legendary percussionists Joao “Comanche” Parahyba (Trio Mocoto) and Ivan “Mamao” Conti (Azymuth), were in LA for the premiere of the film “Brasilintime“. The film put together hip hop artists and Brasilian musicians to make some magic (see some video clips below). The mix by DJ Nuts is a sweetly mixed adventure through some rare Brasilian vinyl. PLEASE ENJOY.
(For some more amzing, and even better mixes from DJ Nuts, go here)
Thank you again DJ Nuts & Dublab.
BrasilintimeはBrasilの有名なパーカショニストーとhip hop djとアメリカの有名hip hop artists(Madlib, J Dilla, Cut Chemist, Egon etc.)
DJ Nuts

In late 2006 frosty jumped to India in search of adventure and sound. He found both at Haji Ebrahim’s Radio Repair & Record Shop hidden deep in Bombay’s Null Bazaar. From mountains of mysterious wax frosty unearthed some spectacularly funky, exotic gems. Listen to this Bollywood Blast and dive deep into eastern energy.
