Ranking Joe & Echodelic Soundsystem @ Dublab

Given that Dublab has been with us for over 10 years now and are holding their annual pledge drive I thought I’d continue on the Dublab tip for a bit. If you haven’t heard of Dublab yet I REALLY REALLY suggest you get yourself acquainted with em. They’ve got SO much going on… Once you become a listener, consider giving a “proton grant”.
As can be seen by the previous post, Dublab brings consistent greatness. This time a priceless set from Ranking Joe on the mic and Tom Chasteen on the turntables. BRILLIANT!
Here’s how Dublab explained it:
“We were thrilled to have the legendary dancehall deejay Ranking Joe come by dublab for another session. He was in town to perform at Dub Club’s New Years Eve sound explosion so the good Mr. Tom Chasteen of Echodelic Soundsystem brought him by the lab for an amazing session anchored by Echodelic’s heavy selections and dubs. So amazing!”
If you are in or around LA make sure to make your way over to the DUB CLUB home of the Echodelic Soundsystem.
ENJOY!

WACKIE’S Mix (all originals) – by Tetsu
This mix is a real treasure coming from a great DJ and friend Tetsu-san. Tetsu has blessed us by becoming a regular DJ at our monthly event “Dub Smokin” every 4th Sat. @ Drum Song in Shimokitazawa. He’s been collecting reggae vinyl for over 20 years and usually puts the rest of us to shame with his wicked selection of mainly original presses. Recently Tetsu-san has been setting a theme for his set each event, and last time at Dub Smokin was an all Wackie’s set which was just amazing – especially on a big soundsystem. Tetsu was kind enough to record a sampling of his Wackie’s all original collection for us. THANK YOU TETSU-SAN
WACKIE’S was an amazing “reggae” label/studio/store started in NY in the 70s by Lloyd Barnes (check wikipedia for more info). Lo-fi, gritty, soulful, Wackie’s has been widely influential.
“Most if not all of the original (1970′s and 80′) Wackies recorded releases are out-of-print and in demand among reggae music collectors. Germans Moritz Von Oswald and Mark Ernestus, passionate devotees of the label’s sound, have undertaken an extensive and ongoing 12″ and LP re-issue campaign for the label through an exclusive imprint in the Basic Channel record label family, bearing the Wackies logo and label design. To date, the imprint has put out work from artists such as Horace Andy, Wayne Jarrett, Love Joys, The Meditations, and Sugar Minott, as well as several strictly dub releases by Wackies-sponsored bands. ” – Wikipedia
For me personally this coming together of Wackie’s and Basic Channel was HUGE. Just out of high school I really got into minimal techno music, especially deep minimal stuff like Berlin’s Basic Channel and Chain Reaction, but new very little about reggae besides Marley and early ska. At this time I had no clue about the connection between techno and reggae (more specifically dub). A few years later my interest in techno waned and interest in hip hop and roots/dub music grew. When I later bought a Wackie’s re-issue I felt I had a divine revelation when I realized that this re-issue of reggae/dub was being released by none other than the minimal techno master minds of the previously mentioned Basic Channel and Chain Reaction, Moritz Von Oswald and Mark Ernestus. It all came full circle to me. I couldn’t believe I never realized it before, how massively the Berlin minimal techno sound was influenced by the Dub music of the 70s and early 80s. And now, here are my favorite techno producers re-releasing some of my favorite reggae. It all came completely full circle when Ernestus and Von Oswald as Rhythm and Sound collaborated with original Wackie’s artists to release some absolutely mind blowing electronic-dub versions of Wackie music. Listen:
2000 年代に元minimal techno/minimal dub producers Moritz Von Oswald and Mark Ernustus (Rhythm and Sound) from the labels Basic Channel/Chain Reaction in BerlinがWackie’s再発をガンガン出しました。
Needless to say, when Tetsu agreed to make this all original Wackie’s set for the site I was thrilled. Now, given everything I said about the connection between dub music/Wackie’s/and Berlin minimal techno, and if you’ve been a fan of the Wackie’s stuff re-released by the German label you may be expecting a set of all heavy roots and dub…this is not the case. The Wackie’s studio and label produced a wide range of reggae music in its years of productivity. This mix is a good sampling of that range…some of the stuff has been re-issued, but a lot of it hasn’t.

music to get married by
SO, i just got married! here’s a little mix i made in stead of a dj. it was mainly just background music for when all my family members weren’t up there singing and making a fantastic wedding. it probably went largely unnoticed by most…except for a few of the aficionados in the crowd. so, for any who were there and curious about what exactly was playing, and for those who weren’t but enjoy a good mix of early soul, jamaican soul and reggae…here you are.
UPDATE – Based on this mix, the owner of my favorite local reggae dive in Shimokitazawa, DRUM SONG, and I decided to throw a wedding party with the whole night being themed around early soul/jamaican love songs. We then made CDs of this mix (which you can now find below) and passed them out to all the guests. A good good time it was!

Timmy McNealy – I Am Glad You’re Mine
Brenda & The Tabulations – Hey Boy
The Rockmasters – Raining Teardrops
Lennie Hibbert – Moonlight Becomes You

Jimmy Cliff – Come Into My Life

Jennifer Lara – ?? – Off the ‘Studio One Presents’album

for sunny days off
this mix was in prep for playing at a small event we put on in Nagano last year; to see how the tracks went together. luckily it turned out ok enough to keep. old reggae and Jamaican funk. goes from toasted “DJ” style tracks through funk, rocksteady reggae; with a few James Brown tracks thrown in in honor of. i haven’t gotten around to putting the playlist together yet, maybe i will someday, or if asked. this is all vinyl except for the JB tracks. please download/stream and enjoy.
Jamaican Funk & Reggae (mix by miked)
for stoney days off
this set was recorded while i was living in Oakland. at that time i had recently decided to start buying some reggae, mainly re-pressed 7″s. this was my first ever reggae mix;playing nearly every7″ I had at the time. this set is all 7″s and is mainly heady roots-reggae and some dub. as with the Funk mix above, i can’t mix reggae and don’t have any effects so this is basically just playing one song one after the other with a concentrated effort to make that transition as painless as possible. this set is dedicated to sitting in Golden Gate Park eating avocado/cheese subs from Yellow Submarine with R. Rosen…homesick

Pure niceness! Love to see the reggae massive hotting up Japan! One of the finest reggae record stores I ever visited was in Shibuya, so I know the massive is alive and well there. All the music is much appreciated and the “Moorie Meets the Dubmasters” is especially tasty!
Comment by Kris Oprisko September 3, 2009 @ 1:20 amSearching for one Lennie Hibbert track and found this site! DL’ing the wedding mix just now and so far its great, new rare music for my ears, not the kinda thing your gonna find just anywhere – golden vintage sounding & sometimes scratchy, lots of bass and quite nostalgic. Fall deep in love to this music (: Peace & Love – Thank you
