Beast of the Yellow Night - GJD

I feel like I say this every post, but it has been a real long time since posting anything up here. Once again have been moving (still in Nagano, but moved into a house. yay.) and a million other things. Hope to have more stuff coming your way soon, but I’m making no promises.
Writing stuff in two languages for the mixes is usually what takes the most amount of time, so this next mix is perfect for this season of little free time.
I don’t have so much to say about this mix other than it is really really good. I’ve listened to it a ton and love it. A super super nice fellow from Australia, Will, I randomly met at an outdoor electronic music festival here in Japan made good on his promise to keep in touch and sent along this mix as a recommendation for the site. It’s actually from a friend of his and this is the message Will sent along with the mix:
Here is a mix by my friend Glenn. He describes it as being Surf/Amazon/Zombie music. It is quite entertaining. Purpose wise it sums up some of the shenanigans that have occurred around at his place over the last few months.
It’s a lovely mix of underground Surf/Rockabilly/Tv/Country…HIGHLY recommend for those of you who love obscure sounding underground gems. Not my area of expertise here, so I’m not quite sure how rare or not these tracks are..but they are outstanding none the less.
ミックスを作った本人がSurf/Amazon/Zombie musicって説明したらし。。。 Rockabilly, Surf,Tv, and Country…
Here lies the mix! (click & save)

Hot Madras – all South Indian 7″s brought to you by Unconventional Science

(All photos, videos, and music, by Nick Everett)
I first became aware of Unconventional Science, Nick Everett, (producer, dj, and vinyl collector “from” LA ) in India by coming across the fact that he was selling some hot records from India that he was digging first hand and shipping back to LA. Being utterly financially unable to buy much myself, I instead wrote asking if he might not mind doing a mix for a stranger with a humble little website. And within a few weeks here we are with some INCREDIBLE, and presumably largely unexplored jams/gems from Southern India. I have been truly LOVING this mix lately….super excited to share it.
I asked the man himself a few questions about Unconventional Science and the mix below:

So what brings Unconventional Science to India? How long will you be staying? Was your purpose vinyl?
Yea absolutely. I used to DJ on the patio at Funky Sole which always provoked me to keep a diverse crate of records. I’ve been into records since I was 14 which is 12 years ago now. I wouldn’t say that I have the deepest crates but I definitely have a lot of choice cuts and work every day to expand that. I love music and have pretty much dedicated my life to hip hop and vinyl so hopefully I can keep working to find a way to support myself on those things.
What’s the overall digging experience in India? Do places tend to know what they have or are you just finding stuff randomly? Any crazy record stories?
There are definitely some disgusting places to dig for records. I had one attic I was going through that was full of all kinds of vermin. All kind of records were eaten away by rats and cockroaches. A few dudes here in Delhi really know their shit but most have a pretty skewed view of whats valuable. Its always a battle with pricing but I’ve found a lot of really amazing stuff that Im super excited to bring back to the states. Really looking forward to going down south in the next month to really dive in deep to the Kollywood record scene.
This is a compilation of south Indian 7″ records from the late 70s and early 80s, specifically - 1979-1983 in Tamil Nadu. India’s modern music industry has almost always released music in the form of film soundtracks. It is for this reason that the music is so grandiose in nature. The Bollywood film industry was centered in Bombay, which is now named Mumbai, but there were other lesser known industries in Pujab, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Orissa, and more. Most notable of these were the films from the south centered in Madras which is now known as Chennai. They called it Kollywood, this was because of the Kodambakkam neighborhood which served as the center of the film industry of the south. The music is loose and energetic but is also laced with South Indian classical music which added a beautiful depth to the songs. The results were often loud drum machines, low fidelity synths, strings, flutes, and other funky elements put it for good measure. It feels like Bollywood without the kitsch. The epic nature of the compositions remain but the sound is much more raw. The stripped down garage studio sound is juxtaposed by funky arrangements for 20 piece ensembles is a wonderful aesthetic. The sounds are a fusion of musical styles rather than the one after another style found in most bollywood arrangements. This adds a much more consistent tone to the songs and leads to more organic sounding songs. These are a few records from this genre I found in an attic in Delhi. Not sure how rare they are but the music of South India is still largely unexplored. Get down to the funky traditional sound of Kollywood!
Please help support Unconventional Science by picking up his new album here. (Only 7$ for some tight beats!) All money will go directly towards new finds in India ; )

Jams mix by miked @ Dublab

(Carmen Maki 7″ “Even if I die” – Words by Terayama Shuji)
As I mentioned on the Asakawa Maki post, when I was back home in LA in December I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to record a couple sets at the Dublab studios.
This set, unlike the Asakawa Maki set, was mainly on CDs and relatively void of forethought. Also, this was my first time ever trying to use CDj machines, definitely threw me off…songs starting when they shouldn’t, general mood of panic – basically, flying by the seat of my cosmic pants…But hey, no better place to close our eyes and use the force of our cosmic pants than dublab! At any rate, I just wanted to give a sampling of Japanese music that I’ve really been into over the years since being here in Japan. Before and since coming to Japan, the world of Japanese music has been a relatively tough shell to crack. Of course there are some standard greats like all the Group Sounds stuff of the 60s, Fuzzed out craziness in the 70s (Raillez etc..), Boredoms, Cornelius etc. in the 90s and 00s, but at the same time you can often be quite hard pressed to find stuff that isn’t just crap or nice try, but that was already done before… Of course, the internet has changed the game enormously in recent years, but it took me years before I didn’t feel like finding a truly great Japanese artist was like finding a needle in haystack; or maybe I’m just getting used to needle hunting.
It also can be an extremely tough task to stay objective and distinguish between the truly great and the mediocre that just sounds good because a) you haven’t been able to find much else or b) because I’m more immersed in the culture than those who don’t live here and therefore like inexplicable/untranslatable things about. Who knows. You can be the judge.
Getting back to the task at hand. In this mix I have tried to put together a mix where the audio-aesthetics would be for the most part agreeable to the pallets of lovers of odd music goodness and dublab listeners of course. The first third of the mix is on vinyl the rest on cds. It begins with some earlier traditional and early folk music numbers and works it’s way in out of the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and 2000s… The title of the mix “Hakkoushokuhin” means “fermented foods”. Fermentation is basically the soul of Japanese food (the heart being rice and soy beans). Sake/Shochu, soy sauce, miso, natto, tsukemono to name a few. In the same smelly, dark, and grimy spirit of this fermentation that makes Japanese food what it is and the people who they are I made this mix. (Yes, I’m being purposely ridiculous.) There is still so much more I wanted to play, hopefully I’ll get around to it someday. Till then,
Let’s eat.
Grab the mix here$$$

Andy Votel – A Bird On The Head Is Worth Six In The Hand – Dublab mix

This one’s just a pass-along from Dublab. One of the more super great mixes I’ve been really enjoying lately. Dig it all, but’ve never heard any of it before. The man has records. Definitely intergalactic.
–From Dublab
We proudly present another masterfully stitched together string of deep gems from the one and only man of a million mystic sounds, Andy Votel. Prior to recording this mix Mr. Votel conjured a flock of ravens to scour the globe for lost musical artifacts with which to brew his sonic spell. As you fall under the hypnotic radiance of this mix click your way into the world ofFinders Keepers and you will be forever set adrift in a zone of musical awe. (The above photo was snapped by the equally far-out Godsy.)

Asakawa Maki Tribute mix – live @ dublab studio Dec. 2010

So I’m jumping the gun a little bit on this one. This mix was recorded for release on dublab, but I’m gonna go ahead and post it before they do (hope they don’t mind). When I went back home to CA for xmas I dropped in to the dublab studios to record a couple sets of Japanese music that I’ve picked up along my stay here. One of the two was this Asakawa Maki tribute set, and the other a Japanese music sampler of sorts which I WON’T be posting here until it’s been up at dublab. The only reason why I’m choosing to post this ahead of time is because I wanted to make sure this was up for the 1 year anniversary of her death, January 17th. THANK YOU DUBLAB for the chance to record this and share with an infinitely larger audience than happen to look under this rock.

Asakawa Maki (Maki Asakawa) has over time become one of my all-time favorite Japanese artists whose records I keep going back to, with whisky in hand, over and over again. The jackets are amazing, Maki looks amazing, she sounds amazing, the musicians… uh, just what you would want a record of a 70s avant-garde, jazz singer from the Tokyo underground to be. You can check her discograpy here at Discogs where you find this short bio of her:
“Japanese female jazz and blues singer, lyricist and composer. Born in January 27, 1942 in Ishikawa-ken. Died January 17, 2010 in Nagoya.
Sang at US Army bases in Japan before getting her big break in a series of concerts organized by underground playwright Shuji Terayama in 1968.”
I first realized that she had worked closely with Shuji Terayama when I noticed that he had penned many of the lyrics to her songs – in the early era. Terayama is a massive name in the avant-garde, underground art world in Japan. The fact that Maki had worked so closely with Terayama intrigued me more than I already had been and made the already perfect picture complete. Definitely check out the world of Terayam Shuji (youtube and otherwise), it can also lead you to the intertwined otherworld of JA Seazar (worthy of another post).
As that bio states, Maki passed away a year ago today in Nagoya city. She had continued releasing records and live performances right up to her death and was in Nagoya for a weekend of shows when she passed in her sleep in her hotel room. My wife and I were lucky enough to get the chance to see her a few months earlier in September of 09 in Tokyo. I hadn’t heard all that much of her later releases so I wasn’t sure what we would find, but she was as dark and under-garde as ever…a truly powerful performance from a woman who completely and perfectly embodied the character that you imagine when looking at and listening to the records. We were planning on seeing her again when we read the sad news of her passing.
This was an all vinyl mix from the records I happened to have at the time. I brought six of her records with me and played tracks from 5 of them. So, just a selection of some of my favorites that I had on record. For the sake of sanity I’m not going to post the tracklist, just the records I pulled from. Feel free to email me if you have any more specific questions about the mix.
The albums are her 1st,3rd,4th,5th and 10th releases. I didn’t have the second release at the time of this mix, I do now, and wish I had it to mix in…oh well. I brought the 6th release, but didn’t use anything from it. All releases are on EMI Express. Album titles are as follows.
Maki no Sekai” (The World of Maki) – 1970
Live – 1972
Blue Spirit Blues – 1972
UraMado” (Back Window) – 1973
One – 1980
So, thank you Asakawa Maki. I hope this is one small step in further spreading your work that should have been more widely enjoyed while you were here.
Enjoy the mix – (feel free to fast forward past my embarrassing spoken intro)

Kutmah – From LA with Love

A tasty mixed sampler from Art Don’t Sleep’s From LA With Love release. Mixed by Kutmah and Take originally aired and still available on the highly recommended Dublab podcast. It’s things like this that feed my increasingly aching homesickness…Thank you LA.
DJ Nuts live on Dublab Radio

Once again, I have to thank the great people over at Dublab for consistently bringing beautiful sounds to the world – special thanks to Frosty. Whenever you just want some good music and vibes to go along with your day, be sure to tune in to DUBLAB radio. Of course, for this mix extra special thanks goes out to DJ Nuts for being down enough to not mind being further shared around the internet. DJ Nuts is truly an amazing dj with amazing records. This mix is actually from a couple years ago, but I’ve never tired of it and am finally putting it up here. I love this mix. Hope you all enjoy it and pass it along. We hope to be blessed with some more goodness from DJ Nuts in the future.
The mix took place at the Dublab studio while DJ Nuts, along with legendary percussionists Joao “Comanche” Parahyba (Trio Mocoto) and Ivan “Mamao” Conti (Azymuth), were in LA for the premiere of the film “Brasilintime“. The film put together hip hop artists and Brasilian musicians to make some magic (see some video clips below). The mix by DJ Nuts is a sweetly mixed adventure through some rare Brasilian vinyl. PLEASE ENJOY.
(For some more amzing, and even better mixes from DJ Nuts, go here)
Thank you again DJ Nuts & Dublab.

BrasilintimeはBrasilの有名なパーカショニストーとhip hop djとアメリカの有名hip hop artists(Madlib, J Dilla, Cut Chemist, Egon etc.)
DJ Nuts
