DJ Nuts live on Dublab Radio

Once again, I have to thank the great people over at Dublab for consistently bringing beautiful sounds to the world – special thanks to Frosty. Whenever you just want some good music and vibes to go along with your day, be sure to tune in to DUBLAB radio. Of course, for this mix extra special thanks goes out to DJ Nuts for being down enough to not mind being further shared around the internet. DJ Nuts is truly an amazing dj with amazing records. This mix is actually from a couple years ago, but I’ve never tired of it and am finally putting it up here. I love this mix. Hope you all enjoy it and pass it along. We hope to be blessed with some more goodness from DJ Nuts in the future.
The mix took place at the Dublab studio while DJ Nuts, along with legendary percussionists Joao “Comanche” Parahyba (Trio Mocoto) and Ivan “Mamao” Conti (Azymuth), were in LA for the premiere of the film “Brasilintime“. The film put together hip hop artists and Brasilian musicians to make some magic (see some video clips below). The mix by DJ Nuts is a sweetly mixed adventure through some rare Brasilian vinyl. PLEASE ENJOY.

Thank you again DJ Nuts & Dublab.

Deadbeat VS Luke Hess @ UNIT in Tokyo

First off, if you’re a reader who’s not into minimal electronic music, just skip this post.
Unfortunately this is not a post of a mix or live pa – just my comments on last night’s show.
So I dig on both Deadbeat and Hess’s music. I haven’t spent that much time exploring either, but more so Hess because, well, Echocord etc. just usually does my head in. However after just playing records and drinking at a monthly event at a little reggae bar from 7-12, I wasn’t exactly sure how well I’d hold up listening to some mellow, dubbed out techno until the first train in the morning – as much as I do love that music.
So I needn’t tell you how elated my feet and I were to just get carried away till the end with some banging 4 on the floor superbness all – night – long. Such a pleasant surprise.
If my foggy memory serves me correctly, I believe it was DJ Wada who was playing before Deadbeat and when I walked in. EXCELLENT deep and banging warm up set…got everyone ready and cheering.
I was actually worried he got everyone too ready. As soon as he just killed the crowd with his last 3 or 4 excellent crowd pleasers (builds and everything) I was so worried that Deadbeat might just come and put everyone to sleep…I mean I kinda figured (judging from the new album and all) that there’d definitely be some danceable stuff, but I’ve been put to sleep by better. How-to-the-ever, Deadbeat just took that energy and RAN. Literally, besides a minute or two of warm up beatless noise and a dub track near the end, it was BANGING the WHOLE time. Maybe others are aware of this side of Deadbeat and I’ve just been in the dark, but considering this was a live PA, it was so much more hard hitting than I expected. The crowd LOVED it.
Then, Luke Hess took over at the controls. Again, just kicked everyone’s ass. Banging the WHOLE set. Granted, UNIT’s system helped and all, but the energy in this live set, as with Deadbeat, completely surpassed my expectations from what I’d heard up to this point. For me, Hess’s set was the absolute highlight. Again, Deadbeat’s set was superb, but I just love that Hess sound…and combined with just banging 4/4….whew. Really, I pretty much stopped buying techno vinyl and started dabbling in djing other kinds of music about 7 years ago and only occasionally listened to techno in that time. However, thanks to the Echocord camp, Sandwell District etc…, and shows like last night – I’m back in.
For those hoping for a mellow, dubbed out evening, the night must have been a major disappointment, but, from the looks of the crowd, Deadbeat and Hess knew EXACTLY what everyone secretly wanted. It was kinda like going in to an event expecting some Chain Reaction/V. Delay dubbyness and actually getting hard hitting Basic Channel/Maurizio - hard to be disappointed. For me it was one of those “ok, techno is really back. there really IS quality, quality shit being put out right now and there seems to be more to come” realization nights. I’ll happily enjoy their mellower stuff on my headphones -
I hung around for some of the last Djs set, mainly waiting for the train, but was also a very quality set.
2 random thoughts that came through my head during the evening ~
First, one of the absolute best things about seeing an artist just work a crowd in Japan is the huge, childlike, shit-eatin grin that inevitably takes over the artist’s face when the Japanese crowd erupts into cheers in all the right places. It’s heartwarming all around. It was more than clear that Luke Hess enjoyed the evening, and even more so that we the crowd did as well.
Second, as much as I really really enjoyed Dj Wada’s set, I just can’t enjoy watching CDjs. I know topics like digital/analog, live mixing/ableton etc… are overly talked about, volatile subjects that bring out the snobbery in the best/worst of us, but I just can’t help it. Maybe I should look at the bright side and take pleasure in the fact that I was able to sit back and enjoy the visuals more than I usually do when I’m watching the records go round. But still, it really just loses something watching, even listening to, a DJ flip through his CD folder and eject/insert….. Both of the DJs were CD only, bummer.
My original plan was to repost a Deadbeat mix an oursoundtracks contributor put together a while ago, and one of the Luke Hess mixes floating around on the net, but neither reflect the evening in the least. So, I’m leaving it here. If anyone out there has *hard-hitting* sets from either artist, let me know. I would love to have some audio to go along with this post.

more Silent Servant

In my effort to build the largest collection of Jasper/Silent Servant mixes outside of Juan’s bedroom (laugh), here’s more. This time we’ve got two mixes coming from past LA events at Interface. Plus a reminder link to check out Silent Servant’s latest mix at MNML SSGS (a site I just can’t say enough about). All of this coming EXTREMELY late, but for those who haven’t found these mixes yet, please enjoy.
(check the “BY DJ” section for more mixes by Silent Servant – both techno and non)
Interface, who is looking to celebrate their 7th anniversary, throws some great minimal parties in LA. Given that I moved out of LA exactly 7 years ago, I’ve never been able to make it to one of their parties, but you can see by their lineups and podcasts that they are worth every penny. Definitely check their podcast for these mixes and many more.

This mix starts off a bit rough, probably first DJ of the evening technical difficulties or what have you, but 10 mins in and its good to go – typical Silent Servant goodness.

Last, but certainly not least, is a link to the latest mix Silent Servant made for MNML SSGS a couple months back. First off, site should be at the top of your bookmark list if you’re into minimal techno – cream of the crop in my opinion. Many thanks to the “sausages”. Secondly, this mix in particular is one of my favorites to come from Silent Servant – ever. Fantastic.

Mari’s Loser Mod Mix

Here’s a mix brought to you by fellow mix-makin-lover and LOSER in Nagasaki; Mari. We exchanged mix cds by mail and this was one of my favorites. A mix of mainly 60’s UK Mod and Psychedelic rock that finishes strong giving us a taste of its Japanese contemporaries The Spiders, and OX. There’s also a track by a contemporary Japanese band The Crazy Ken Band that though modern, goes well with the mix. Thank you Mari!! Looking forward to more!
Here’s the playlist:
1. Darling
2-3. The Mascots
4. Them
5. High Numbers
6-7. Small Faces
8. George Fame
9-11. Manfred Mann
12-17. Tomorrow
18. Crazy Ken Band
19-20. The Spiders
21-25. OX

the lolotape

If anyone has shown me the joys of mixtapes it has been Pete St. Lawrence. His creativeness and thoughtfulness in choice and cover art work, has always made me have to turn it up a notch when returning the favor. It has been a few years but Peter and I have shared soooo much music together over the years…it’s what we do best together. This is just one amongst many a mix of good tunes I’ve received from Pete.

WACKIE’S Mix (all originals) – by Tetsu
This mix is a real treasure coming from a great DJ and friend Tetsu-san. Tetsu has blessed us by becoming a regular DJ at our monthly event “Dub Smokin” every 4th Sat. @ Drum Song in Shimokitazawa. He’s been collecting reggae vinyl for over 20 years and usually puts the rest of us to shame with his wicked selection of mainly original presses. Recently Tetsu-san has been setting a theme for his set each event, and last time at Dub Smokin was an all Wackie’s set which was just amazing – especially on a big soundsystem. Tetsu was kind enough to record a sampling of his Wackie’s all original collection for us. THANK YOU TETSU-SAN
WACKIE’S was an amazing “reggae” label/studio/store started in NY in the 70s by Lloyd Barnes (check wikipedia for more info). Lo-fi, gritty, soulful, Wackie’s has been widely influential.
“Most if not all of the original (1970’s and 80′) Wackies recorded releases are out-of-print and in demand among reggae music collectors. Germans Moritz Von Oswald and Mark Ernestus, passionate devotees of the label’s sound, have undertaken an extensive and ongoing 12″ and LP re-issue campaign for the label through an exclusive imprint in the Basic Channel record label family, bearing the Wackies logo and label design. To date, the imprint has put out work from artists such as Horace Andy, Wayne Jarrett, Love Joys, The Meditations, and Sugar Minott, as well as several strictly dub releases by Wackies-sponsored bands. ” – Wikipedia
For me personally this coming together of Wackie’s and Basic Channel was HUGE. Just out of high school I really got into minimal techno music, especially deep minimal stuff like Berlin’s Basic Channel and Chain Reaction, but new very little about reggae besides Marley and early ska. At this time I had no clue about the connection between techno and reggae (more specifically dub). A few years later my interest in techno waned and interest in hip hop and roots/dub music grew. When I later bought a Wackie’s re-issue I felt I had a divine revelation when I realized that this re-issue of reggae/dub was being released by none other than the minimal techno master minds of the previously mentioned Basic Channel and Chain Reaction, Moritz Von Oswald and Mark Ernestus. It all came full circle to me. I couldn’t believe I never realized it before, how massively the Berlin minimal techno sound was influenced by the Dub music of the 70s and early 80s. And now, here are my favorite techno producers re-releasing some of my favorite reggae. It all came completely full circle when Ernestus and Von Oswald as Rhythm and Sound collaborated with original Wackie’s artists to release some absolutely mind blowing electronic-dub versions of Wackie music. Listen:
2000 年代に元minimal techno/minimal dub producers Moritz Von Oswald and Mark Ernustus (Rhythm and Sound) from the labels Basic Channel/Chain Reaction in BerlinがWackie’s再発をガンガン出しました。
Needless to say, when Tetsu agreed to make this all original Wackie’s set for the site I was thrilled. Now, given everything I said about the connection between dub music/Wackie’s/and Berlin minimal techno, and if you’ve been a fan of the Wackie’s stuff re-released by the German label you may be expecting a set of all heavy roots and dub…this is not the case. The Wackie’s studio and label produced a wide range of reggae music in its years of productivity. This mix is a good sampling of that range…some of the stuff has been re-issued, but a lot of it hasn’t.
